No instant reprieves for axed players
Micky Adams
Micky Adams

Micky Adams has told fans not to expect an instant reprieve for any of their old Albion favourites.

The new manager kicks off his getting-to-know-you process today when he meets some of the men who are under contract at the club for the 2008-09 campaign.

Players are due to report back over the next two days for fitness assessments but those who were told last week they were not being offered a new deal will not be among them.

Adams revealed on Friday that he would review the retained list, possibly raising hope that some of those players released last week could be in for a swift recall.

He said: "That's not the case. We will judge everyone on their own merits and decide where we go from there.

"I know there has been comment about some experienced players being released.

"When I've fully assessed the squad, then I might make some telephone calls."

Players will be asked to give an honest assessment of the 2007-08 campaign, in which they finished one place outside the League One play-off zone.

Adams added: "Some of them I know, some of them I don't know too well. It's important that we just have a five-minute chat with everybody and they give a brief outline of how they think their season has gone and how they can improve."

Among those reporting back will be Michel Kuipers, the keeper Adams signed in his first stint at the Seagulls, and Andrew Whing, who played for the new Albion boss at Coventry City.

there were no surprises really except rents and cobbs, other than loft and sicknote being given money under false pretences, how can this club enploy those two and white shows the club is a jolly for friends of --- and co. time the club had clean up from top to toe. and clear out of backroom.

Mark I don't understand your total dislike of the backroom team, We have definitely progressed this season and they must take a degree of credit. I am confused as to why the players were released the day before Adams returned or was it Dick Knights list??? I am still not happy at Wilkins treatment and I don't ever want to hear Knight talk about player loyalty and what a great family they are. I would like to see Cobbs and Rents given six month contracts just to give them the chance to step up and would love Hinshelwood to have an njury free season and realise some of the promise he showed, I was surprised loft was retained and I hope he repays the faith

Steve Coppell is making a sensational return as Albion manager.

He has agreed a three-year contract and will be unveiled by the club at a press conference today, five years after leaving for Reading.

Coppell, 52, takes over from Micky Adams who has been offered the role of first-team coach.

Chairman Dick Knight said: "The board felt we need a manager with more experience to help the club make the great leap back into the Championship.

"It's vital that we get back there as quickly as possible, before we get to our new stadium at Falmer."

Knight broke the news to Adams last night.

"We very much want him to stay," the chairman said. "His strengths lie in coaching and the development of players.

"For obvious reasons Micky is in shock and we don't expect him to come up with an answer yet. He needs to think about it and we will do everything to persuade him to stay."

Knight stressed that all of Albion's 79 coaching staff would stay. Dean White remains assistant to the manager but is now is a superior position to Adams and Dean Wilkins, who becomes assistant to the first-team coach, and Ian Chapman, assistant to the assistant coach. Martin Hinshelwood is still something else and Barry Lloyd stays as chief scout.

its not a dislike of the backroom staff, its common knoledge wilkins sat in his office for last 5 months and left coaching to chappers and white, that was with squad of 30 odd players, now squad will be more like 25 ish we will have white, wilkins and chapman! white has no real qualifications ,he has his second fa badge , the same as nearly half the players, wilkins and chapman have real coaching badges. my point is do we need those three? plus a keepers coach? and i seriously hope adams gets out on the training ground. then we have lloyd, hinshlewood .. the club are losing money at 60k aweek!! as for hinshlewood, no plyer has recovered from three operations on same knee! as for loft his contract is a sham. you and every other fan knows it. if he has not been good enough to start, why keep him ? rents would have been better in left mid than loft, wasting the supporters money.

when is it my turn again? i will help the club back into the fa cup! perhaps i could be manager for cup games, i would bring in jimmy case as my number two adams my number three, wilkins would be in charge of day to day man management, and white his number two, chapman his number three, chaz oatway his number 4.. in charge of testamonials for coaches would be brighton legend doug loft who on his 30 birthday played his tenth game for the albion, planning for falmer has been made more difficult in obtaining planning for a 50 bed staff quaters.

Along with some of the released players will MA also be looking to some players who were at the Albion during his previous reign?

What price on a McPhee return now - after a winning goal at Wembley, an England call-up and now a return to the Withdean!?

the same chance as loft has of being captain and player of the year!! having said that, its a funny game! pleased to hear rents is back in league one. and cobbs has offers. can some one tell me why we need more coaches when we have a smaller squad? why not raise money for the club by having a reality tv programme... celebrity football manager! cilla black in charge! followed by lulu. can anybody think who would host it? i did think celebrity swimming coaches was a better idea , but micheal barrymore refused the job of hosting it.

Interesting post. I seem to remember that Adams was an admirer of McPhee, and talked about a pairing of McPhee and Zamora frequently. I personally would not be surprised if we start next season with a Forster/McPhee partnership up to. With Murray on stand-by to replace Forster as the game goes on - I think this is a dream front attack. I think DK needs to act fast to secure McPhee on a 3-year deal after his wembley exploits

You must be joking. McPhee! I've only supported the Albion for four years but that's long enough to know that McPhee is one of the most ineffective players i have ever seen. PLEASE DON'T SIGN McPhee! For the love of God don't do it!

You must live in a bubble Rob!!

Since being at Ebbsfleet McPhee has taken his game to a new level and is considered their best player. I think a utility man of that calibre would be a great signing and signal the intent of the new boss. It would certainly give a few of the current squad a kick up the backside too

The fact that Micky's been doing some scouting for Stoke over the last few months means that he's had a chance to look around and is aware of who is available. He has probably already drawn up a short-list of potential targets for the Albion.

The Albion squad as it stands is:

GK: Kuipers, Sullivan
Def: Whing, Elphick, Lynch, El-Abd, Hinshelwood
Mid: Cox, Thomson, Robinson, Fraser, Loft, Chamberlain, Fogden
Stk: Forster, Murray, Dixon, Gatting and Gargan

I would like to see a left-back (Richards?), left midfielder (Westlake?), central midfielder (Levein?) and a striker (Gillespie?) signed.

Another goalkeeper would be nice but not essential with Sullivan there.

Are Sullivan, Hinshelwood, Loft, Fogden, Chamberlain, Dixon, Gatting and Gargan are up to first team standard?

The Players revive thing all sounds good but out of the 10 i could only say i fancy 3 that could get back in: 1.Rents Easy probably the best left back at the club before signed Richards in loan. 2.Martot likes to play the football game rather than the longball game he also played in over 30 games this season then doesn't get offered a contract. 3.Butters Good strong leader who has more experience than anyone in the division should be offered another deal because at his age to play in more than 20 games is easily worth a deal. Another player who i would like to see back at the albion and saw him on the last home game this season would be Bertin he has learnt from his mistake and should be given another chance.

Adams is known to be a keen admirer of McPhee and was apparently close to signing him when he was Coventry. The word is that McPhee will be one of the first players Adams brings in now and I am all for it. Showed his true class at Wembley as was sad that we not given more opportunities to do so when he was at the Albion before. Can't wait to see him hitting it off with Forster - its potentially a Premiership standard strikeforce.

Forster and McPhee premiership standard strikeforce? Have you taken something?
Posted by: mark, brighton on 1:58pm Mon 12 May 08
the list martyn has produced concerns me!
1. martyn continues to produce lists,
2. we have four defenders only, no one can seriously think sick note will be fit? the squad looks very thin. and elphick will join wolves! so we have 6 or 7 players needed, the players martny mentions ie fogden loft chamberlain are not up to the physical of div one, as for dw can he seriously work under dean white? can the club afford new players when a bigger bench is required for the coaches to sit on,
Posted by: jon, london on 2:34pm Mon 12 May 08
Agree with most of what you say Martyn, but Gatting I believe has got what it takes. Holds the ball up well and while he didn't score many a couple of seasons ago when given a run I watched most of the games he played and I think he will steadily improve.

Yes, but what we must NOT do is pay over the odds for him - something we have been guilty of doing in the past (Murray, Forster, Dixon, McFaul spring to mind). Personally, I would not pay over 100K for McPhee - we have to remember that he has been out of the football league for 2 or 3 seasons now and needs time to settle in.

OK, Chris McPhee(Aka Scarfer, Rob, Sam) we've got the message - you want to come back to the albion. WE HAVE GOT IT!!!! I have seen you play this year and you were good against the standard of players put in front of you. As was Richard Tiltman and Mark Farrington before you...

Scarfer & Bossman, I can't believe how many suckers fall for your wind-ups everytime re McPhee. Still, it is amusing. The real truth is that Wenger has had him watched and we have no chance of getting such a class player as he is apparently off to Spain...Real Madrid... or was it Real Sociapath? I expect you guys will know.

you may laugh, but white would make a great manager........... for palace!! seriously how is he still at club? it must be he is a friend of dk, thats all it can be, as most managers have their own backroom staff, but not here. wilkins cant eat that humble pie just for a job, and white telling him what to do! if the club wanted wilkins to stay then he would have said adams is co manager, in some effort to save his face.

Mark - If Fogden, Loft and Chamberlain aren't up to League One football why have they been retained?

Jon - what is the use of a striker that can't score?

Kev - El-Abd will sign as he isn't going to attract a bigger club than us!

So, everyone who goes to watch home games is brain dead. Not much of fan then are you dave as I assume you haven't been this season. Just because we go to games doesn't mean we don't criticize the club. It's just that we don't all have this anti DK/DW paranoia that you exhibit. That's a bit, er, rich coming from a Leeds fan. How many tens of millions in debt were Leeds as they plunged from Champions League semi-final to League 1? (By the way, it's 9,000, not 7,000, and Leeds have won 1 of the last 6 matches against BHA)

There was a sell on clause but having received staggered payments for appearances Villa paid us off with about £500k I think. Might seem cheap now but we needed the money then. Not bad for a player that never played for us. Add to this the money from Virgo and Harding and our youth set up has helped keep us going.
